5 Star Valentine’s Day Books for Kids

I LOVE reading stories to my kindergarten class because it calms and engages them instantly. However, for this activity to be successful, it’s crucial to have a good book. Here is a list of 15 kid-approved Valentine’s Day books with a 5-star rating. #ad

1. Love is My Favorite Thing By Emma Chichester Clark. This adorable book tells the story of a dog named Plum who has a big heart but sometimes makes poor choices. Despite her mistakes, her family still loves her. Even though the story revolves around a dog, it is very relatable for kindergarteners.

2. Here Comes Valentine Cat By Deborah Underwood. Cat is frustrated by his neighbor, Dog. He keeps throwing things over the fence and hitting Cat. The story ends with a delightful twist.

3. Love Is By Diane Adams. This book is written like a poem about a girl and a duckling, teaching that love sometimes means letting go.

4. There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose By Lucille Colandro. My class loves this series so much! I like to have my class all say the repeating phrase together. For example, I will read, “I don’t know why she swallowed the rose” and my class will all respond with “But that’s how it goes!” They love it!

5. Rocket’s Secret Valentine By Tad Hills. In this cute story, students can use rhyming words to help Rocket solve the mystery of who is leaving valentines.

6. The Invisible String By Patrice Karst. This book is perfect for students who have separation anxiety. It teaches that there is always an invisible string connecting you to the ones you love.

7. Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch By Eileen Spinelli. In the story, Mr. Hatch receives a note and some candy from an anonymous admirer, which makes him very happy. However, he soon discovers that it was intended for someone else and was delivered to the wrong address. He is pleasantly surprised at the end of the story when he learns that the entire community loves him.

8. The Biggest Valentine Ever By Steven Kroll. Two friends attempt to create a valentine together but end up in an argument. This relatable story is great for students.

9. Words and Your Heart By Kate Jane Neal. This book reminds us of the power of words and their potential impact on a person’s heart.

10. If You’ll Be My Valentine By Cynthia Rylant. This is a simple and sweet Valentine’s Day story about a boy who makes valentines for his family.

Who Wants a Hug? By Jeff Mack. Bear annoys Skunk by hugging too much. Skunk devises a plan to stop the hugging. This humorous book is popular with kids.

Froggy’s First Kiss By Jonathan London. Froggy has a crush on Frogilina and when she is around, he does things that make him turn more red in the face than green. This silly book always makes my class giggle.

Harvey the Heart Had Too Many Farts By Jane Bexley. I debated whether to include this suggestion, but decided to because it has received a 5-star rating. Please use your judgment to decide whether your class will be able to handle it or not (some years they just can’t). The book is about a heart that loses friends because of his tooting problem. Your students will find it hilarious. What is it about five-year-olds and farts? LOL.
